I hate winter! So, when spring showed up and the opportunity to get a flat of strawberries arose, I carpe diem-ed it! True to my nature I didn’t have a lot planned for these guys. I just knew I wanted them.
Fruit roll-ups are what I ended up with!
I have a dehydrator and with a garden—one of these is a worthwhile investment. I am able to dry the veggies I don’t have time to eat or can. Plus, dehydrated food takes up a lot less room than freezing. A cookbook came with the dehydrator but my fruit roll-ups aren’t anything special! I simply washed, pitted and pureed my strawberries and then poured them on my dehydrator. (I added a tiny bit of sugar and some lemon juice, too.) Pretty simple. It took a good while for them to dry to my desired “stickiness” if you will but so worth it!
I keep a resealable baggy in the diaper bag for when I need “ammo” (as my husband and I call it) to address an unhappy toddler. I just pass her back a roll up and it keeps her busy while we’re in the car.
Before I made these, I googled some recipes. There’s a billion out there. You can go as detailed as you want but a simple puree will do the trick. If you don’t have a dehydrator you can use your oven set to a very low temp (200 degrees Fahrenheit, tops) as well.
This is the dehydrator I use. It came in extra handy with my first pregnancy. The sight of meat made me nauseous but for some reason jerky was fine. You better believe I was making a lot of jerky on this thing
